NYC Subway Train Derailed on Section of Track Set to Be Repaired

The New York City subway train that derailed during rush hour on Friday morning occurred on a section of track that had been scheduled by the Metropolitan Transit Authority to be repaired in 2015.

The F train derailed in Queens near 65th Street and Broadway, when six of the train’s eight cars jumped the tracks, injuring 19 people.

The MTA had labeled the area of track where the derailment occurred as a “critical rail break” corridor, which was set to be repaired sometime next year.

According to MTA records, the existing rails on that section of track are currently bolted together. After the repairs, the rails would instead be welded together for increased strength.

An investigation into the official cause of the derailment is underway.
