Michael Brown’s Family Pursues Wrongful Death Lawsuit
The family of Michael Brown plans to file a civil lawsuit against the city of Ferguson, Missouri, and former Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson.
The announcement of the lawsuit comes just after the U.S. Department of Justice’s decision to not file federal charges against Wilson.
“We are officially formulating a civil case that we anticipate will be filed very shortly on behalf of the family,” said Anthony Gray, the family’s attorney. “We plan to demonstrate in a court of law that Wilson’s choice to use deadly force was unreasonable and unnecessary.”
A report by the Justice Department revealed, in addition to emails from police officials that reveal racial bias, that the city of Ferguson has a history of racially biased patrolling practices.
St. Louis Alderman Antonio French said the report “just confirms what many of us already knew and what has been experienced by many African-Americans here in the St. Louis region for quite some time.”
Attorneys for the Brown family want the case to establish the accountability of the police. French calls for the chief of the Ferguson Police Department to resign.
